Home battery rebate: STC factor schedule and size tiers
Under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, the number of small-scale technology certificates (STCs) a home battery creates depends on its usable capacity and the date it is installed. From 1 May 2026 the STC factor is 6.8 per kWh, and capacity above 14 kWh earns a reduced share. The next scheduled step-down is on 1 January 2027, when the factor falls to 5.7.
STC factor by installation date
| Installed | STC factor per kWh |
|---|---|
| 1 January 2026 – 30 April 2026 | 8.4 |
| 1 May 2026 – 31 December 2026 | 6.8 |
| 1 January 2027 – 30 June 2027 | 5.7 |
| 1 July 2027 – 31 December 2027 | 5.2 |
| 1 January 2028 – 30 June 2028 | 4.6 |
| 1 July 2028 – 31 December 2028 | 4.1 |
| 1 January 2029 – 30 June 2029 | 3.6 |
| 1 July 2029 – 31 December 2029 | 3.1 |
| 1 January 2030 – 30 June 2030 | 2.6 |
| 1 July 2030 – 31 December 2030 | 2.1 |
Size tiers (from 1 May 2026)
| Usable capacity band | Share of the STC factor |
|---|---|
| Up to and including 14 kWh | 100% |
| Above 14 kWh up to 28 kWh | 60% |
| Above 28 kWh up to 50 kWh | 15% |
Each band is applied only to the kWh inside it: a battery larger than 14 kWh earns the full factor on its first 14 kWh and 60% of the factor on each kWh above that, up to 28 kWh. The battery rebate calculator works it out for your battery size and date.
Points from the Clean Energy Regulator
- The rebate is set by the installation date, not the date you sign a contract.
- The regulator has asked retailers to give quotes that reflect the changes and to honour signed contracts.
The dollar value of certificates is set by the market and varies, so this page does not state a dollar rebate. The calculator lets you enter a certificate price to see an estimate.
