Editorial Policy

Our principles

  1. Facts from official sources. Figures, rates, thresholds and dates come from primary official sources such as government agencies and regulators. News and commentary are used only to discover changes, never as the source of a figure.
  2. Every figure is sourced and dated. Each number links to its source and shows the period it applies to.
  3. No advice, opinions or forecasts. We don’t recommend products, providers, investments or actions, and we don’t predict prices, rates or markets.
  4. No rankings or judgements of businesses. Comparisons list verifiable attributes such as price and features. We don’t call anything “best” or “worst”.
  5. People are not the subject. We don’t write about private individuals. Officials are named only as the source of an official announcement.
  6. Announced is not law. Policy changes are labelled as announced, legislated or in effect.
  7. Original work. We write our own text and make our own charts from data. We don’t copy other publishers.

We report rules; we don’t interpret them

For tax, rebates and government benefits we state only what the official source says: what applies, from when, to whom, and how much, with a link to the source. We don’t tell you whether a rule applies to your situation. Where that needs judgement, we point you to the official agency.

We update calculators and data pages only after the responsible agency has published the change on its own website. Changes that have been announced but not yet published by the agency are labelled announced.

How we use AI

We use AI tools to help draft articles and summaries. To keep this accurate:

  • AI drafts cannot contain typed-in numbers. Every figure is inserted automatically from our verified data files.
  • Facts are extracted from the official source twice, independently. If the two results differ, the item is held back.
  • Each draft passes automated checks: every figure and factual statement must match a source, wording that gives advice or opinions is blocked, and text is compared against sources to prevent copying.
  • Before publication, a person compares each fact on the page line by line with the matching sentence in the official source. Anything unclear is not published.

Calculators

Every calculator is tested against worked examples or tables published by the official agency, and is published only when every test passes. We don’t publish a calculator for a rule that has no official worked example to test against.

Independence

The site is funded by advertising. Advertisers have no say in what we publish, and ads are clearly separated from content.
